Spain won the Women’s World Cup, but online users are more interested in the super-cringe moment when the nation’s football president planted a kiss on one of the players’ lips after the victory.
The squad embraced after defeating England in the final and receiving their gold medals on Sunday.
Luis Rubiales, the head of the Spanish football organization, gave Jenni Hermoso a kiss directly on the mouth as he congratulated the athletes at the end of the line.
Hermoso said she wasn’t a great fan of what happened, but she’s still supporting him, claiming it was a spontaneous, reciprocal gesture born out of all the post-win pleasure. It’s a really awkward moment, especially considering he gripped the back of her head.
She continued by saying that they have a terrific connection and that his behavior with the squad has been excellent. She is hopeful that the fans would instead be focusing on the team’s victory.
Of course, the kiss has received a lot of attention online, with many people labeling it wholly wrong, but Hermoso doesn’t agree.
